Why Do So Many People Silently Suffer With Emotional and Mental Issues?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO): "Fewer than 25% of those with depression world-wide have access to effective treatments," and "...stigma, discrimination and neglect prevent care and treatment from reaching people with mental disorders."

"The good news from research is that self-help programs can be quite effective. Research reviews have determined that the effectiveness of self-help substantially exceeds that of no treatment and nearly reaches that of professional treatment (eg., Anderson, Carlbring, & Grimlund, 2008; Mechola, Arkowitz, & Burke, 2007; Cuijpers et al., 2010.) For example, in one analysis of the effectiveness of 40 self-help studies, effect sizes for self-help were nearly as large as for therapist-assisted treatments (Gold & Clum, 1993.) Fears, depression, headaches and sleep disturbances were especially amenable to self-help.

Similarly - bibliotherapy - a fancy way of describing the use of self-help books, has been shown to be valuable for many adults (Marrs, 1995.) Comparable findings have been reported for the effectiveness of self-help books with specific disorders, such as sexual dysfunction (van Lankveld, 1998), depression (Gregory et al., 2004), anxiety disorder (Weekes, 1996), problem drinking (Apodaca & Miller, 2003, Riper et al., 2011), panic disorder (Carlbring , Westling, 8: Andersson, 2000), and geriatric depression (Scogin, 1998.)"

Self-help is recognized as an accessible, economical, and extremely effective form of mental health treatment. Many studies have validated the invaluable benefit of e-books and internet-based help - workbooks and manuals.

Why is Self-Help SO EFFECTIVE?


According to The British Standards Institution,

"Stress manifests as a physical, psychological or social dysfunction resulting in individuals feeling unable to bridge the gap with the requirements or expectations placed upon them."

When you are armed with information and tools to cope with stress and meet the demands of the situations you find yourself in; you develop self-efficacy.
Self-efficacy is the belief that you can perform in ways to achieve certain results. It involves a kind of confidence in your ability to influence your own behaviour, your motivation and your environment. Self-efficacy has been linked to success in:

Self-efficacy is not the same thing as self-confidence or self-esteem but it certainly affects these. It is a mindset that combats helplessness, powerlessness, confusion and uncertainty. It is about beliefs - not necessarily ability - and beliefs are something that you can choose and change.

Raising your self-efficacy increases your ability to take on challenges and grow; it increases your persistence and drive; widens your perspective and safe-guards your self-esteem from negative events.

What About Willpower?

If you're like most people, you probably beat yourself up for not being able to overcome your mental health issues on your own. If only I could stop smoking, yelling, drinking, procrastinating or obsessing about...." Misconceptions about willpower prevent many people from seeking the help they need and lead to shame and secrecy.

The American Psychological Association's (APA’s) 2011 Stress in America Survey found that almost a third of respondents blamed lack of willpower for their inability to make positive changes in their lives.

But willpower isn’t just a matter of drive, determination, resolve, self-control or self-discipline, the APA reports. It is:
This definition contains the keys to real change that The Self-Help E-Library is based upon. What are these keys? Think of the normal idea of willpower. Whose will are we talking about? We often think of willpower as a force we use against ourselves! As if this is a battle and willpower is the Might and Right and our Self the weak and despicable thing to conquer and eradicate.
But if willpower refers to "the ability to delay gratification, resisting short-term temptations in order to meet long-term goals;" that means that willpower is supposed to be our ally rather than our opposer. If willpower is "a limited resource capable of being depleted;" then there is another source for your continual power to instigate, persevere and maintain positive change. Willpower is a tool meant to be used sparingly. Willpower is to be our slave rather than our master.

But therapy can take many years and cost thousands of dollars. Self-help is so helpful because you take charge of increasing your awareness. And - a therapist isn't the person that is with you 24/7 - you are.
